During the summer of 2007, CAM’s artist-in-residence Taj Forer began a series of photography workshops at Anathoth Community Garden in Cedar Grove, NC. In these workshops, local residents were encouraged to take part in a creative dialogue with their surroundings. The Garden served a source of inspiration and an incubator of ideas for this artistic exploration. Armed with film cameras, participants made photographs all through the two-acre garden as well as inside their homes and around the community. What resulted is an intimate documentation of renewal, regeneration, and hope.
Throughout June 2008, Flanders 311 on West Martin Street in Raleigh will serve as a temporary site for CAM to share information about Growth I: The Garden. This space will allow visitors to explore Anathoth Community Garden through the eyes of people who regularly care for the land and share in its bounty. The gallery will house works created during the last year including photographs produced by workshop participants, audio recordings, and series of images made by Forer.
The Growth Project is a continuing theme for CAM to explore creativity in everyday interactions and interventions. As the project sponsor, CAM is facilitating activities that open up spaces for experimentation. This project is grounded in practices of thinking, looking, and doing. Community members are encouraged to participate in events that support this earth-sensitive, community-based artmaking project.
