Design Camp is an annual summer design program offered to high school students at NC State University College of Design. Since its inception more than 20 years ago, Design Camp has exposed more than 2,000 high school students to the exciting world of design. Design Camp informs students about college study in design and raises awareness of the impact of art and design through a series of weeklong summer programs. In 2007, Design Camp became an outreach program of CAM (Contemporary Art Museum). CAM joined the College of Design in February 2006, becoming the lead component in the college’s Art + Design in the Community Initiative. Design Camp projects challenge students to explore their creativity and critical-thinking skills while pushing them to try a range of techniques and media. The exploration of the design process teaches students to question, make choices, generate alternatives, work collaboratively and ultimately broaden their understanding of the world around them.
Camp participants work with camp faculty on projects involving each of the following design disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design, art + design and graphic design. In addition to studio projects, students participate in other activities all aimed at stimulating their creativity and broadening their understanding of the design field.
In 2009, we will offer two different camp formats for high school students. Design Camp Overnight and Design Camp Day.
*application forms will be available to download in February, 2009
Please make sure to fill out each section of the application legibly and completely. The counselor section MUST be filled out by your school counselor. We do not need copies of your transcript. Applications that are incomplete will not be considered. Camp slots are filled on a first-come first-served basis. Please be advised that the camps fill up VERY quickly so please apply early! We do our best to notify you of your acceptance within 10 business days of the receipt of your application.
We can accommodate 80 students in each of the overnight camps (40 females, 40 males). For the day camp, we generally accept a maximum of 100 students.
In order to be considered for financial assistance you must also fill out the full general Design Camp application. Make sure to indicate that you plan to apply for financial assistance on your general application form. Due to the additional requirements for the financial assistance application you may choose to mail in the general Design Camp application first so that a space may be held for you. It is rare that an applicant will receive the full registration fee. Most financial assistance awards cover a portion of the registration fee. The balance of the fee will be due in May 2009.
High school students (rising sophomores and juniors for Design Day Camp and rising juniors and seniors for Design Camp Overnight).
Tuition for the Overnight Design Camp is $800, and the Design Day Camp is $400. These fees cover the cost of instruction, lodging(for overnight participants), meals, project supplies and activities. A $100 down payment is due with the completed application for either program and will be applied towards tuition. Checks must be made out to NC State University.
CAM will consider requests for financial assistance based on demonstrated need. Parents/Guardian must submit a completed financial assistance request form and the student applicant must include a letter stating their goals and artistic interests. School counselor verification is required. Financial assistance request forms will be available online in February 2009.
Download the online Design Camp Application (application forms will be available online in February 2009). Make sure to complete the entire application form, including the section reserved for your guidance counselor. Applications are accepted on a first come first serve basis until all slots are filled. Please be advised that the camps fill up VERY quickly, so apply early!
In 2009, all camp studio activities will be based at the College of Design’s newly renovated Leazer Hall. This is also where you will check in on the first day of camp.
Overnight participants are housed (double occupancy) in residence halls on campus. We do not honor roommate requests. Counselors reside in the residence halls to supervise activities at all times. The College of Design does not provide housing or overnight supervision for day campers.
One of the best aspects of Design Camp is our wonderful and energetic staff! Camp Counselors are all undergraduate and graduate students at the College of Design. They are the best possible ambassadors for their design discipline and are eager to share their knowledge about design and applying to design colleges with camp participants. Our staff are carefully selected from a large pool of applicants to ensure the best possible camp experience for all our participants.
We highly recommend that parents plan to drive their campers to camp. Parking on NC State campus is very limited and not secure overnight. Exceptions can be made for those students attending the day camp, but they must contact camp staff two weeks prior to the start of camp to request a parking permit. Parking permits cannot be ordered upon arrival at camp. Please contact designcamp@ncsu.edu with any questions.
The camp does not provide transportation to and from RDU airport. We do, however, put campers in touch with one another so that they may share taxi service and carpool to and from the camp. And of course, camp staff will assist campers needing to schedule taxi service to the airport at the conclusion of camp.
